Gourd babies

Wonder of wonders, look at this baby Bottle (Birdhouse) Gourd. The vines are going crazy and flowers everywhere, tons of little potential Gourds, but no forming yet of the bottle shape. Until Monday. I spied one close to the ground. I've been watching it all week. Holding my breath, because I've read online where they can form and then suddenly just get brown and shrivel and die. That won't happen to MY Gourd. But last night I noticed it looked less green and full. And tonight when I took my camera out to get a shot of it and the crazy vining, I found it brown and dying. I am determined not to get my spirits down and I searched the vine high and low for another starting Gourd and finally I found one, hiding beneath a leaf. I will have to start talking baby talk to them and encouraging them along. I hope hope hope it grows. I am so excited about this plant I can barely stand myself. I rush home from work and dash to the garden, like a mom picking up her baby at day care.

All those white tips in the photo below are the closed flowers, the start of Gourds, though some will be male and wont make the fruit.

The one just below are the small ornamental Gourds. I have no idea what they will look like. That's pretty exciting too. But not as exciting as growing Gourds shaped like bottles. What a cute little eggbert though.

When they are just starting, like the tiny one in the photos below (see on the far left in the first photo?), they look like happy yellow gum balls. The other one there on the right with the flower attached, seems like a new Gourd shape. I do hope I got more than one variety with the ornamental mix. Will have to watch that one too. Wow...totally cute. I hope, hope, hope they will be OK too. Ya know what? THEY WILL.

Great pictures. I left the computer on at your blog and came upstairs to Eric checking out the gourds.
